“I am what I am” – Popeye

What are we, really? Are we bodies only? Perhaps we really are only spirits, and our bodies are some kind of an illusion. Some believe that we are two beings - one material and one immaterial - and that the material is an obstacle to be overcome by the immaterial “person.”

Or, perhaps, we are something entirely different. That is the position taken by Kyle Brousseau, in reviewing a book by Lainey Greer: Embodied Holiness. You can read his quick analysis by clicking  --> here <--

In historic biblical theology, believers come to understand that we humans, made in the image of God, are “psychosomatic” unities. In other words, we are a psyche (mind, spirit, heart, soul), and we are bodies. They are not separate entities, as if one has to be overcome through surgery, deprivation, or depravity. Instead, they are knit together in such a way that when we encounter eternity, we will be resurrected bodily. Both realities (physical and spiritual) live on together!

For further reading, I recommend the following books:

“Our Bodies Tell God’s Story,” by Christopher West (Brazos Press)

“Theology of the Body,” by Pope Joh Paul II

This view of our psychosomatic beings will cause us to treat our bodies with dignity and respect. They are given to us by God with a specific purpose. It is up to us to care for and respect the temple that God has given us!

Dedicate your body to the honor of your Creator.

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. ( 1 Corinthians 6:19-20)
