For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world,[g] in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. - Romans 1:18-20

I will link a Church History video below that got me to thinking about how modern schools (non-Christian ones) teach about faith. They will tell you that faith is a "leap in the dark." The narrative would tell the believer-to-be that he is leaping into the vast unknown based on an unsubstantiated belief of what lies in the unseeable deep.

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

God gave us all common sense and expects us to use it. Jesus taught us about the unknown things of his Kingdom by pointing to the known things on earth. This world is a shadowland of things to come. The things that are unseen are made apparent by the things that are seen.

That is not to say that faith is a sterile logical conclusion. If that were so, then everyone would be a believer!  However, the proclaimed divorce between reasoned conclusions based on evidence and faith have been greatly overblown. The two walk hand in hand - with faith in the lead and reason/evidence playing a supporting role.

I have used this illustration before: When you head to the grocery store and buy a can of baked beans, most of us (there are exceptions -- I am thinking of one person in particular) do not check the expiration date. We assume that the grocer would not put expired food on the shelf for our consumption. The bright lable gives us the impression that it was recently produced. The brand is popular, so the stock flows through the store's supply quickly. Think about it, we have never bought food from this grocer that is expired. Based on all of this evidence, we reach out in faith and put those baked beans in our cart and head to the checkout stand, eager to see what maple-smokehouse-masterpiece-brown suger beans really taste like.

Yum.

But this is not a leap in the dark. All that we know from this world and our own experience lead us to take this small "bunny hop" (not really a leap) of faith. And when we take that hop, the Holy One of Israel, Yahweh himself, is holding our hand!

So is faith in Biblical Christianity. All sciences support a reasonable belief that the words of the Bible are true. If belief in Jesus were unreasonable, Christianity would have died off centuries before our time. To the contrary, our senses tell us that faith in God is very much alive, and is the reasoned landing point of a vast array of thinkiers, from the simple to the brainy.

When you pick up your Bible and read it today, know that the words you are processing are truth and life. The Word's call to surrender your life to the Lordship of Jesus requires faith - a reasonable faith.
