In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 1:1-5)
This is my preferred Advent passage because it is so deep in theology and the understanding of who Jesus is, how he relates to God the father, his role in creation, his role as the light of our souls, and it ends with the ultimate victory over darkness. I have linked a song by Phil Driscoll that, to this day, brings me to my knees in worship. (I first heard this song in 1983, 42 years ago, when the record originally came out).
"And the light sines in the darkness, and the darkness comprehended it not."
Here is a great breakdown of this amazing introduction to the person of Jesus, as expressed by John in his gospel. Access the article by clicking --> here <-- In it, James Hamilton separates the understanding of Jesus as the Word (or logos) from Gnostic myth, Greek philosophy, and the Hebrew traditions that the Pharisees touted at the time of Jesus' earthly ministry. Instead, he sees the Word through the interprative lense of the Old Testament (especially the creation narrative) and John's own gospel.
Good hermaneutics (how to read and understand the Bible) are key to a faithful understanding what God has communicated to us!
