Each day of holy week has its own name. Wednseday is no exception. We learn why it is called "Spy Wednesday" from Matthew 25:14-16

14 Then one of the twelve, whose name was Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they paid him thirty pieces of silver. 16 And from that moment he sought an opportunity to betray him.

This amount of money was a fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy, enacted by Zecheriah (chapter 11). It is uncertain how much money the 30 pieces of silver are, but its value is at least five weeks worth of labor. Even if the value was more, it reminds us of the poor price that was paid to destroy Jesus.

Luke gives us more insight into how this disciple was turned into a betraying insider.

3 Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve. 4 He went away and conferred with the chief priests and officers how he might betray him to them. 5 And they were glad, and agreed to give him money. 6 So he consented and sought an opportunity to betray him to them in the absence of a crowd.

The enemy of the cross, it was his design. The same enemy that tempted Jesus after his baptism, entered the heart of a disciple. The enemy thought he had won.

He did not.

Sunday is on its way!!
