'Went to a memorial gathering for a deceased neighbor of this church last night and saw a debate between two avid fans: one of the Dallas Cowboys and the other a Kansas City Chiefs fan. (all in good fun, but with an edge). Then I saw this article (--> here<--) about the value of the Cowboys franchise.
Folks, they are the most valuable franchise in all of sports. It isn't even close. And they haven't won a Superbowl in 30 years!!
Q: How is mediocrity sold to the public and consumed at such a ravenous rate?
A: The same way the world will sell you on its way.
You may think the Cowboys are "blessed," because of all the dollars that lines Jerry Jones' bathtub, but look at what God's word says about being blessed:
Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night. (Ps 1:1-2 We dig into this on Sunday!)
This world will package up a bunch of trash in shiny ribbons - maybe even put a shiny star on it - and tell you that you need to consume it to be blessed! Many will!
When you buy it, all you get is the counsel of the ungodly, the way of sinners, and the seat of scoffers. And broke. And ultimately unhappy. And un-blessed.
Q: The better way?
A: It is lies in the unshiny package of God's Word! Blessed is he who delights in that Word, and in that Word, he meditates night and day.
Don't be fooled by packaging and glitz! Lean in to what God has given us. (Touchdown, game over!)
