As I read this --> article <-- by the Executive Director of the Missouri Southern Baptist Convention, I was struck with his central message: sharing your faith is easy. I am someone who has walked out of my way with a Bible to find someone who would listen to me preach. I have handed out gospel tracts at heavy metal concerts. I have prayed in public, hoping that someone will catch on to the message of Jesus the Christ, the Son of God, who offers life to those who believe.
But then, there is the t-shirt. Bearing a simple message of faith. Worn to a hardware store. And the conversation that is sparked from that one simple act of choosing attire can be effective, genuine, and refreshing.
There is something that happens to us when we go to our wardrobe, closet, or drawer and pick out the one shirt that has a cross on it. It is a check on how we live. What are the words that we will choose that day? What is the attitude we will display before others? What is the witness that will come out of our life choices? Do they comport with the cross on our clothing, or does our garment make us look like a hypocrite?
This should cause us to pause and intentionally live life on mission that day. We should pray as we slip on the message of the risen Jesus – pray for organic meaningful conversations. When they happen, take time to listen. I teach the students who are taking the “I Am A Christian” class that Christian service involves setting aside what fascinates us in order to serve. We must set aside our schedules, the expectations of others, and our own comforts so that we can have true Spirit-filled discussions with those who react enthusiastically or negatively to the message of the cross.
