Recently, the President's personal social media posted a deeply racist and ugly image about two people of color. It entertained racist stereotypes, degraded two people made in the image of God, and was sinful. To every Christian who voted for the President, this was deeply embarassing.
Leaders have also been identified in Jeffery Epstien's "files." In other words, leaders whom we may follow, or oppose, could have been caught up in a secret evil lifestyle.
This is why we do not put our trust in people. Only God is holy. Only God is trustworthy. God is to whom we run when the people of this world let us down.
Here are things to recall when national leaders whom we may support or oppose, whom we may have voted for or against, engage in morally evil conduct.
(1) Psalm 20:7 reminds us that, "Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God." We do not place our trust in man. The Bible is laden with examples of national leaders who were wholly wicked, but even more examples of leaders who give us a mixed bag. They do some things that are good, then turn around and do harmful things or engage in idolatry. Let our hope be only in the God of Creation who has spoken through the words of his Word!
(2) We speak out when we see evil. We mourn with the victims of evil. We mourn with the families who were tragically killed in Minnesota, and we mourn with the families of those whose loved ones were killed by the violence of people who are here illegally. We speak out when national leaders support policies that are evil, and we speak out when national leaders engage in sinful behaviors. We do so with love, respect, and courage. This means that we should be free to speak out against leaders that we may have voted for, or who may have done some good things. Sin is always sin, and we should not be afraid to denounce it.
