Burnout. Malaise. Boredom. Routine madness.
Do any of these describe the instant emotion that bubbles up when you think about your work? If so, you are human (congratulations)! Because of sin, work takes on a shape that is hard to recon with. It becomes a slog instead of a joy. It becomes a point of pride instead of a way to point to Jesus. It becomes all about us instead of being all about God.
In this short article by Kyle Tucker (access it by clicking --> here <--) the problem and solutions for workplace discontent are explored. He draws from the well of 1 Thessalonians 4
9 Now concerning brotherly love you have no need for anyone to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another, 10 for that indeed is what you are doing to all the brothers throughout Macedonia. But we urge you, brothers, to do this more and more, 11 and to aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you, 12 so that you may walk properly before outsiders and be dependent on no one.
(1) View work as an expression of divine love.
(2) Display quietness as you pursue excellence.
(3) Live and work on mission.
I like this quote from the article:
As Dorothy Sayers writes, “What the Church should be telling [an intelligent carpenter] is this: that the very first demand that his religion makes upon him is that he should make good tables.” High-quality work proclaims God’s creative excellence to the world.
Proclaim Christ in all circumstances, using your workplace, the work of your hands and mind, as well as the teambuilding and influence that God has given you with other as tools to do so!
