So, Easter is over. Is that it? Is there more?
Yes - there is more! Churches, going back to early Christianity, have celebrated "Ascension Day," as well as Resurrection Day. It was a part of the liturgical calendar ... until it wasn't.
Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. (Heb 4:14-15)
We shouldn't let the resurrection go unnoticed because God's Word bears witness to it and places imporance on it!
If Christ sits on his throne, from where he will return, and from which he will judge you and me, then getting from the incarnate to the ascended is impotant for us. Do not skip over this part of the story of redemption.
Because Christ ascended, he sent the Holy Spirit. That is good news for all of us, who could not all be in the close physical proximity to Jesus if he had lingered in human form and not sent God's Spirit to be with us!
From his place in heaven, Christ intercedes for us. We have an advocate for us in the resurrected Messiah!
“Christ rules, Christ intercedes, Christ sends. And because He has ascended, He gives the Church life, He empowers through the Spirit our Gospel mission and He leads us with His exalted presence and assurance in our Gospel mission until He comes again.”
